I make cut out sugar cookies just about every year, but truthfully, I don’t always enjoy it. I don’t like a recipe that calls for too many fussy ingredients, takes too much time, or that yields a mediocre outcome.
This year, I think I finally got the recipe right! Mashing up a few that I’ve used over the years, here’s my new go-to for delicious, perfectly soft-yet-crisp cut out sugar cookies!
Perfect Cut Out Sugar Cookies
1.5 c butter, softened
2 c sugar
0.5 tsp vanilla extract
0.5 tsp almond extract
5 c all purpose flour
2 tsp baking powder
1 tsp salt
0.25 tsp nutmeg
0.25 tsp ginger
0.5 tsp cinnamon
Cream butter and sugar together.
Add eggs one at a time until combined.
Beat in vanilla, almond extract, and seasoning.
In a separate bowl, combine all dry ingredients. Gradually combine with the wet mixture.
Once dough has combined, divide into fist-sized balls and place in fridge.
After dough has chilled, remove each fist-sized ball one at a time to roll out and bake. The dough becomes difficult to work with once it has reached room temperature, so if necessary roll warm dough back into a ball and refrigerate again.
Bake at 350 for 12 minutes
Decorate as desired
